A Bucket of Blood
Bumbling busboy Walter Paisley (Dick Miller) works at a beatnik coffeehouse populated by artists, poets, and dope addicts. He longs to belong and, inspired by the poetry around him, tries his hand at sculpting. When he accidentally kills a cat and covers it with clay, it becomes a celebrated work of art. Soon Walter has moved on to killing people and is the hit of the local art scene. Roger Corman regulars Barboura Morris and Anthony Carbone are the couple running the coffeehouse who are first exalted by Walter's success and then rather worried. Director Corman shot this little gem of black comedy in an amazing five days for $50,000. It's since become a true cult classic, practically inventing its own genre and perfectly satirizing the self-righteousness of the then-emerging beatnik movement, not to mention the whole world of contemporary art. Miller lends pathos as Walter, and the rest of the cast is just hilarious, particularly Julian Burton as the pretentious and portly poet whose recitation on the "artist" (accompanied by jazz sax solo) opens the film. Corman reused the same general tone and story for THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS the following year. More Information... |

A Cry in the Wilderness
Seventies made-for-TV wilderness film about a man who gets bitten by a skunk, and, fearing rabies, chains himself to the barn and orders his family not to come near him, no matter how rational he may seem. Well, it isn't long before a crisis comes along that only dear old and possibly rabid dad can handle: locating the blockage of the river, their only source of water, and a flood danger if the blockage is not removed. With his family afraid to go near him, he pleads with them to free him. Could this be a ploy to escape and infect the rest of his clan? Reviews Los Angeles Times 09/21/1990 "...A fine family film, an appealing survival-in-the-wilderness saga of much natural beauty and minimal sentimentality..."

A Decade Under the Influence
Examining the 1970s, the decade that has come to be seen as North American cinema's most revolutionary and experimental, this reverent documentary directed by Richard LaGravenese and the late Ted Demme interviews a handful of the key players and survivors of that fertile time. Beginning with EASY RIDER (1969) and other offshoots of producer/director Roger Corman's virtual training ground for young directors at b-movie studio American International Pictures, DECADE traces the trajectory of filmmakers such as Dennis Hopper, Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, William Friedkin, and Paul Schrader. With clips from TAXI DRIVER, SHAMPOO, MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER, THE GODFATHER, and many more, the film conveys the richness of talent that the 1970s film world possessed. But the birth of the blockbuster (namely JAWS and STAR WARS) raised the studios' expectations for financial performance in the industry, virtually killing the chances of riskier productions--a development which gave birth to the thriving independent scene we know today. While even the filmmakers go out of their way to point out that their film is by no means all-inclusive, A DECADE UNDER THE INFLUENCE is flashy and informative, a trip well worth taking for both the novice cinema-goer and film scholar alike. A History of Violence
Canadian director David Cronenberg, whose impressive oeuvre includes such disparate works as THE DEAD ZONE, THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, M. BUTTERFLY, and SPIDER, has made what might be the best film of his career with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Loosely based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, the movie stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, a quiet, easygoing family man who runs a diner in a small Indiana town. But when two dangerous criminals come into the restaurant prepared to wreak havoc, Stall turns hero and shoots them both. After Stall's story is blasted all over the media, Philly mobster Carl Fogaty (an excellent Ed Harris) shows up, claiming that Tom is actually former hit man Joey Cusack--and they've got some important business to finish. While Stall insists that Fogaty is mistaken, his family--his wife, Edie (Maria Bello); teenage son, Jack (Ashton Holmes); and young daughter, Sarah (Heidi Hayes)--gets dragged into the danger that constantly threatens to explode. Cronenberg, whose films often deal with the fantastical, the futuristic, and the supernatural, has done a masterly job creating a wholly believable modern world where evil lurks just around the corner. Howard Shore's tense, moody music complements the outstanding acting in a violent, powerful film that is not to be missed. More Information... |

A Lot Like Love
From British director Nigel Cole, whose sweet-hearted comedies CALENDAR GIRLS and SAVING GRACE shared a similar combination of humor and true emotion, A LOT LIKE LOVE is the story of two friends who seem destined to love each other--if they can ever realize that themselves. Meeting on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, naive Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) and tough Emily (Amanda Peet) have sex in an airplane lavatory before learning each other's names. Despite this intimate introduction, Emily is uninterested in getting to know the guy she just picked up, telling Oliver frankly that he's not her type. The two part ways, but end up running into each other hours later in what proves to be just the first of many semi-coincidental romantic encounters. After spending a fun day together in the city, Oliver gives Emily his home number and tells her to call him in 6 years, once he's gotten his life and career figured out. When an unforeseen breakup leaves Emily dateless for New Year's Eve a few years later, she calls Oliver and they meet again. In the years that have passed since their first meeting, Emily has taken up acting, Oliver has started an online diaper-selling business, and both have gotten more flattering haircuts. But Emily is disappointed to learn that Oliver is moving to San Francisco for business the next day. Over the course of a few years, Emily and Oliver grow to depend on each other in times of crisis, and develop a solid friendship. While each sporadic encounter contains an undeniable spark, the timing never seems to be right, with several bad relationships, career transitions, and location changes getting in the way. But will the pair realize their feelings for each other and get together before it's too late? Reviews Sight and Sound 08/01/2005 "[Peet] brings a down-to-earth vulnerability to her role..."USA Today 04/22/2005 "Amanda Peet's vitality is the movie's driving force..."Los Angeles Times 04/22/2005 "[T]he dialogue is refreshingly natural. Kutcher is surprisingly well cast...and Peet is charming and charismatic without being cloying or artificial. Together they drum up some believable, low-key chemistry and an easy, funny rapport that is pleasant..."New York Times 4/22/2005 "[Kutcher] has enough natural charm to hold the screen without effort..."

A Paper Wedding
In an unfortunate turn of events this film was released after the sleeper hit GREEN CARD, as it deals with the same exact subject and plot. However, while GREEN CARD succeeds as a romantic-comdey, PAPER WEDDING paints with more subtle strokes, focusing on issues of identity, integrity, and the pain of a "settling." Canadian actress Genevieve Bujold gives an exceptional performance as a middle-aged professor, self-possessed and strong, who enters a marriage of convenience with a Chilean political dissident (Manuel Aranguiz) who is faces certain death if he is extradited. When the two are forced to move in together to persuade Immigration Services that they're a genuine couple, a very human connection grows. Reviews Chicago Sun-Times 03/06/1992 "...Thoughtful, honest and affecting....Directed gracefully and with admirable restraint by Michel Brault, PAPER WEDDING speaks quietly but forcefully..."Los Angeles Times 09/20/1991 "...Michael Brault is a filmmaker with an overwhelming talent for evoking the here and now, a talent that streaks through his latest film, A PAPER WEDDING..."New York Times 06/21/1991 "...[A PAPER WEDDING] is given considerable substance by the performance of [Bujold]..."
